Éclat Part 75

There are a lot of weird and wonderful instruments on the internet. Today's challenge comes to us from one of them; a collaboration between Holly Herndon and Never Before Heard Sounds.

Holly+ is a virtual instrument which allows for anyone to upload polyphonic audio and receive a download of that music sung back in Holly Herndon's distinctive processed voice. You are free to use the material generated as you see fit! (Accreditation is always appreciated.)

Today's challenge features a small selection of samples that have already been run through the Holly+ instrument. You can EITHER use these samples by downloading them from WeTransfer here, OR you can create your own sounds by uploading your own samples to the Holly+ site and downloading your own results!

Holly Herndon is an artist and composer who has been working with machine learning for many years. Her last album PROTO(4AD,2019) was the first to utilize singing neural networks, and she completed my Doctorate at Stanford's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics, where her research focus was on the interplay between machine learning and the voice, and the implications of this technology for IP and vocal sovereignty.

If you'd like to know more about the instrument, click here for the full rundown! There's a lot of ins and outs regarding copyright and a DAO and other things, but basically, you're free to use these samples however you'd like, and if you want, you can send your resulting tracks to Holly via social media. You can use any other sounds or synths that you like, but you must use at least TWO samples that have been run through the Holly+ Instrument, either of your own making or from the supplied pack.
